Nashville Thermal Waste to Energy Plant

The project came as a surprise to the city of Nashville as a 4-alarm fire raged through the city’s waste to energy site. After the thermal plant caught fire the situation continued to worsen. The tipping shed structure was sagging due to the warped steel trusses spanning more than 200 feet long. The pit was completely full of trash consisting of 10,000+ cubic yards. The overhead cranes were destroyed and the boilers had lost power; therefore, methane gas was building from the refuse beginning to deteriorate. After negotiation between three chosen companies, EAI was selected to perform the stabilization of the site. We removed the tipping shed, established negative pressure ventilation in the methane-producing troughs, removed the unstable 22-foot concrete “T” exterior enclosure and excavated the trash from a 30+ foot pit. The project was completed in 10 weeks, accident-free. The project and our company were on the cover of the National Association of Demolition Contractors magazine in the November/December issue 2002.
