BNA Nashville Short-term Garage

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA) selected EAI for the structural demolition of the former Short-Term Parking Garage (STG) at BNA in Nashville as part of BNA’s Vision 2 Package. The STG encompasses approximately 1,000,000 sq. feet of post-tensioned, covered surface parking over three stories.

Additionally, the STG is connected on two levels to the airport terminal for both departures and arrivals by a series of connectors (covered and uncovered).

EAI will perform the structural demolition of the STG and the connectors as well as designing and installing an elaborate system of dust control/tarp systems on the immediately adjacent CONRAC Parking Structure (Rental Car) and the newly constructed Terminal A parking structure. Both facilities being less than 30 feet from the STG.

Project scheduling required the demolition of the Short-Term Garage in 12 weeks working 20 hours per day (two shifts) with a dedicated 96-hour shut down of valet service lanes and arrival lanes during demolition of the connector systems to the terminal.

• Design and installation of two dust control/tarping systems able to withstand winds of 110+ MPH for both adjacent Parking Structures – CONRAC & Terminal A. This equated to over 40,000 sq. ft. of dust/tarping systems.
• Utility disconnects of electrical and plumbing systems servicing the structure including the disconnect of dedicated fiber lines feeding from the terminal to adjacent parking structures.
• Demolition of 1,000,000 sq. ft of post-tension parking structure with associated processing, separating, and hauling. Two 10-hour shifts per day/12 Weeks/6-days per week.
• Operation of 6 excavators ranging from 60,000 lbs. to 120,000 lbs. with attachments.
• Establishment of crushing site on additional airport property for the processing of the concrete and separation of any remaining re-bar and metal– estimated for over 50,000 tons of processed concrete.
• Diversion of remaining building products from the landfill including roofing/C&D materials and metal; currently we have diverted greater than 95% of all building products from the landfill.
• 96-hour continuous demolition of the connector systems servicing the STG to the terminal, including structural demolition using pulverizers and the cutting of truss systems with aerial lifting via 265-ton cranes. Schedule was met with both the arrival and valet lane traffic opening on schedule.
